How to Use Outlook 2013 Client to Remotely Start Applications on Windows

How to Use Outlook 2013 Client to Remotely Start Applications on Windows

These days almost every second person has a device which is connected to the internet. Smartphone, Tablets and Phablets launching every day, with the latest Smartphone apps you can always connect to your home machine. But chances are sometimes device you are carrying is not compatible or smart enough to connect your Windows PC and also it can't handle remote access applications.
Ever stuck in a situation when your outside and you forget to shut down your pc, mostly people like me found themselves in such kind of troubles.
These days mostly people carry Smartphone with themselves, which can pretty much connect to your home machine. But there are chances you might not be having a Smartphone or it's not compatible to run any smart app which can remotely connect to your pc.
But guess what we have solution for every tech related problem; we will teach you how to use any device to remotely connect to your Windows PC/Laptop with just an e-mail account and an internet connection.
Getting Started: We need a Windows PC connected with internet (always up) running Microsoft Outlook configured with an email account.
We will complete our task by using "Rules for incoming emails." Worry not we are here to help you.
Tip: Gmail account users can simply use sRemote, which does the same thing for us.
We will start with "how to create e-mail rules for incoming messages in Microsoft Outlook," for this we will be using latest 2013 rules as Microsoft has recently launched Windows 8.
Step 1: Go to Home tab and browse to Rules >> Manage Rules & Alerts.
Step 2: Click Manage Rules & Alerts window, a window will pop displaying the current rules if you have any. Select New Rule button.
Step 3: Rules Wizard window will pop up. From the "Start from new rule" option, select Apply rule on massages I receive and click Next.
Step 4: In the next window of Rules Wizard, we will have to set condition. Select two options: a.) from people or public group b.) With specific words in the subject.
You can also select other conditions but following two are important and must.
Step 5: In the very same window, you will notice Step: 2 saying "Edit the rule description." Click on the link "people or public group" and "specific words".
When you click "specific words" you can add words like shutdown, we will use "start notepad" as specific words, after setting the parameters, click Next.
Step 6: This is the most vital step in all, where we set an action to perform on the rule we set. Here in this window you can select options like "start an application" or "run a script". Select "start an application" for the process to understand (you may set other rules later.)
In the bottom half of the same window, click on the link application and pick an application you want to start when our set rule is triggered. Select Notepad to test. You may write your own script.
Click Next to finish the Rule Wizard and also make sure that our rule is set and turned on.

How to Trigger Application Remotely

Now to test our created rule, I have used a Gmail email account on the receiving end, and used "start notepad" as specific words earlier. Now we only need to send to Outlook with a word "start notepad" in the body of the mail.
At the receiving end a mail will be received and our set rule will be checked, if it encounter specific words in the body of the mail, set rules will be followed and it will start the Notepad application.
